Timeless sophistication meets contemporary charm in the latest scheme by RZ Interiors: a pair of children’s bedrooms in a light-filled home in Toronto.
The design duo were tasked with breathing new life into the existing dull bedrooms by the client, a family who had recently upsized from a condo apartment and were feeling overwhelmed with the amount of space they now had. Prior to a consultation with both kids to determine their dream bedrooms, it was crucial to plan each space meticulously, sourcing cleverly designed, bespoke storage that was both functional and beautiful.
The end result is two beautiful spaces that have a classic yet modern feel, with injections of magic subtly woven in through sympathetic design details.
After sitting down with the kids to learn about their favourite colours, subjects and interests, both bedrooms were designed with a theme in mind, each reflecting their inhabitant’s respective personalities. Custom millwork accommodated for all the additional storage space required, from drawers for folded items to closed cabinets for seasonal clothing.
“Good design starts with space planning,” says Bahar Zaeem, co-founder of RZ Interiors. “We always start by thinking about how people use the space; what do they need in it, and what will they be using it for day-to-day? Interiors should be efficiently planned – you might think you need more space, more storage, but we’ll always try and guide our clients towards the simpler solutions that still have maximum impact.”
In the girl’s bedroom, the flamingo accent wallpaper paired with a rich walnut wood bed frame and hints of gold and pink lends a feminine yet very sophisticated look. Whitewash walls and clean lines enhance the feeling of spaciousness in this light-filled room, with a millennial pink stool providing the perfect finishing touch to the vanity area
In the boy’s bedroom, inspired by lived-in comfort of varsity sweats, a monochromatic palette of indigo-blues mixed with bold hints of copper, clean navy stripes and natural tan leathers offer an eclectic feel to the space – one that will remain timeless when he grows up. Furnishings have been carefully selected; from chic tonal cushions to a smart tan armchair, each one adds to the ambience whilst ensuring the room does not look cluttered.
Shima Radfar, co-founder of RZ Interiors adds, “We wanted to bring the whole family’s vision to life in this project, and I think that’s what we have achieved. It was, and always is, important to be both a consultant and a good listener. We lend our expertise when mapping out the space, finessing the colour scheme and thinking of the finer details. But it’s equally important to understand what the client wants – speaking with both kids and finding out their passions was key to creating bedrooms that they wouldn’t just live in, but ones they would love, and love for years to come.”
