Restoring magnificence to a church altar

When RZ Interiors were tasked with designing an altar back wall for The Rosary Parish Church which would blend well with the existing millwork, the team knew that it was imperative to create a scheme that was sensitive to the current aesthetic yet visually impactful. The team worked with construction specialists Renokrew to transform and enhance the existing altar, by introducing integrated niches with wide flat trim profile and decorative antique brass moulding which were perfectly aligned to the existing paintwork and finishes. Although no additional furniture was installed and the icon placements were kept the same throughout, existing display pieces have however been amplified through clever use of lighting, which draws the eye to icons of Jesus and accentuates every detail with stunning impact.

Thoughtful use of space is evident through the proposed integrated and floating bench seating and desk, both of which have the same front finishes but are set at varying heights – in fact, the design team have been considered throughout the process, becoming aware of the rituals and how the altar is used for various events to ensure it continues to be perfectly functional yet aesthetically pleasing.

 

The end result is a cohesive design that blends old with new and ultimately, one that suits the location and neighbourhood. From the refurbished pews to the architectural stonework, the restoration is truly breath-taking and has been warmly received by the Rosary Parish community.
